Scottish Qualifications Authority

I can support pupils to achieve key national qualifications set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Further details on the format of National 5 French exams are below.

Course Offerings National 5

SQA National 5 course develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of French and covers the topics of society, learning, employability and culture. The course allows students to develop their reading, listening, talking and writing skills. A combination of classroom assessments and final SQA exam provides the result.  Pupils will complete internal unit assessments as part of the course and a final SQA exam which consists of four key elements:

1. Reading

3 reading texts with comprehension questions to be answered in English. Each text will cover a different context: society, learning, employability or culture.

3. Listening

A monologue and a conversation with comprehension questions to be answered in English.

2. Writing

In response to a job advert, candidates will write an application letter. This must cover the six bullet points highlighted in the question. Additionally, an assignment writing piece is undertaken in class.

4. Talking

A presentation of at least 1 minute 30 seconds and a conversation in French to last for a minimum of 5 minutes. Both talking assessments are held by the class teacher.
