French Highers

I can support pupils to achieve key national qualifications set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Further details on the format of Higher French exams are below.

Higher French can, for some, be quite a leap from National 5 standard. National 5 is seen as the building block, and Higher French develops the language knowledge, incorporating more detailed and complex language structures in the real-life contexts of society, learning, employability, and culture.

Course Offerings for Highers

The contexts used will be very topical, relevant to young people today, reflecting what is important to them and today’s world.  For example, the impact of modern media, the importance of healthy living, growing up and relationship issues, leaving home, studying, finding work, and travelling.

Like National 5 a combination of classroom assessment and final SQA exam provides the result. The final SQA exam consists of four key elements:

See here for more on contexts…

1. Reading and a translation

Reading text with comprehension questions to be answered in English, followed by a translation of a section of the text.

3. Listening

A monologue and conversation with comprehension questions to be answered in English.

2. Writing

Directed writing of 150-180 words with key points to cover in the text. The directed writing task assesses candidates’ ability to use appropriate past tenses and at least one other tense.

4. Talking

A recorded discussion on 2 contexts with the class teacher, lasting approximately 10 minutes.
